Are you ready to celebrate your students' math skills? The 2005 Kumon Math Challenge is scheduled to take place on Sunday July 10, 2005 at Hayward University! Improvements to the program include:
-
Newly revised tests!
- Increased scholarship awards!
- Secure and easy on-line registration and payment
- A new gift!
- Quicker reporting system!
What is The Kumon Math Challenge?
The Kumon Math Challenge is an annual summer competition for children in grades 1 through 10. Your child doesn't have to be a Kumon student to enter. Kids get to challenge their math skills and vie for scholarships awarded by Kumon. The event is open to the public and takes place at 33 universities across the United States and Canada. The top 10 students in each grade level will be awarded scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,500. (local currency)
The purpose of the event is to motivate children to develop their math skills in the summer and practice test-taking in a university environment. We want to celebrate, as well, the student?s math skills.
- The winning student in each grade is eligible for up to $1,500 (local currency) in scholarship money.
- All registrants receive a small prize.
When and Where will The Math Challenge be held?
The Kumon Math Challenge will be held on Sunday July 10, 2005 at California State University at Hayward for Bay Area students. The test starts promptly at 11am and testing for students in grades 1 -5 is forty minutes; testing is sixty minutes for students in grades 6 ? 10.
When students register they must fill in the grade they are in as of April 2005. For example, if you are in Kindergarten now, you are not eligible to register this year. The test is only available to students that are presently in grades 1 ? 10.
What changes have been made to improve this year's Math Challenge?
- An increased number of grade-level and one year above grade-level test questions
- A decreased number of questions that are two and three years above grade-level as well as fewer non-computational items
- The addition of a few hard application problems (to be used as tie-breakers)
Each of last year's tests followed the same three section pattern: computation, word problems and non-computation
items and within each of these sections, the items were presented from easiest to hardest. Many students experienced difficulty early on in the test, getting stuck on some of the hardest computation questions and leaving the rest of the test blank. This year's test construction will be reorganized for more optimal student performance. The test questions are arranged easiest to hardest through out the test negating the need for three performance. The test questions are arranged easiest to hardest through out the test negating the need for three distinct sections of the test. Easy computation questions, followed by word and non-computation problems will be followed by medium computation, word and non-computation items, with the hard computation, word and non-computation problems being placed at the end of the test.
These simple changes will result in more students answering more questions, and completing more of the test. Even with these improvements, the test itself will still be very difficult. We expect that students studying one year ahead of their grade level in Kumon will achieve between a 60 and 70 percent, which is a terrific score!
Start preparing your students now to take the challenge! Inspire them to set a goal for higher achievement in their Kumon studies over the next few months. And encourage students to take the practice test that will be
available on-line soon. All of these are very important. Good Luck!
